Here's a fantastic VFX reel originally posted by Disney for awards consideration on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' YouTube channel, unveiling the monumental magic achieved by Star Wars: The Force Awakens' visual effects team.  When the Oscar annoucements were made early this morning, the Abrams-directed space spectacle garnered five nominations, for best film editing, best original score, best sound editing, best sound mixing and best visual effects.

Abrams vowed to go old-school in his approach to the special effects in Star Wars VII and used practical applications, real-life sets, props and makeup techniques whenever possible.  This video provides a fascinating dissected peek at how the various tools were utilized to bring the story to life and maximize the emotional resonance for the audience.  It's an amazing amalgamation of practical effects mixed with digital effects, digital simulations, green screen, practical mockups, live-action animatronics and digital explosions, full digital shots, plate photography, motion capture digital characters and blue screen interior sets with digital extensions.

Strap in and have a layered 10-minute look at the creative stages involved in delivering a new modern classic.
