We’ve been hearing a lot about potential spinoffs starring established Star Wars characters, but it sounds like the team behind the revitalized franchise might also have some fresh ideas for the beloved sci-fi series.

Writer Lawrence Kasdan, the man who penned Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, is currently putting together a screenplay for one of those mysterious Star Wars spinoffs. Though he wouldn’t tell us exactly what he’s writing, Kasdan has commented on J.J. Abrams’ hire to direct Episode VII—and teased the direction Disney will be taking the franchise as a whole.

In an interview with Hero Complex, Kasdan promised that the new slate of Star Wars projects won’t be rehashes of what we’ve seen before:

“Hollywood’s become such a difficult place to do certain kinds of stories, and a lot of them are the kind of stories that I did all the time. To do a big movie that Hollywood does now, that you think can be better than most of them … that’s a rare opportunity.

George sort of brought me into this part of it, and he’s stepping back from the company. He’s sort of given his blessing to everybody, and he’ll be there if you need him. I think everyone’s interested to see where this can go. It’s been some very different places over 30 years …. I think with J.J., we’ll get something entirely new.”

Kasdan is the man responsible for coming up with many of the iconic quotes and scenes that fans still love to this day, so it’s nice to see he’s excited about where the franchise is headed. Here’s hoping he stays true to his word and it really is something fresh, because I don’t think anybody wants another Jar Jar Binks debacle.

Would you like to see more focus on old characters, or some completely new stories in a galaxy far, far away?
