You think Alien was scary? If the trailer is anything like the upcoming Hulu series, you’re about to meet a whole new level of terror in The Handmaid’s Tale.

In a two-minute trailer, we get a look at what to expect when we’re not expecting the takeover of America by a hard-line theocracy. Our protagonist Offred describes how our world was asleep when “they blamed terrorists and suspended the constitution.” But now she’s awake. And the world she’s living in has made her a reproductive sex slave, cloaked in religious phraseology.

The Handmaid’s Tale, based on the novel by Margret Atwood, is a chilling story of a woman who is trying to survive and find her missing daughter. Against all odds, she finds allies and, eventually, the tiniest bit of hope. But having read the book, I assure you, there’s a lot of darkness before this dawn.
