After dipping a toe back into the space waters last season, Syfy is launching its most ambitious space opera this side of Battlestar Galactica in a few weeks. Now we have a fresh look at The Expanse.

The series, based on James S.A. Corey’s hit series of sci-fi novels, is set a few hundred years in the future. The solar system is basically divided among three factions, and all of civilization teeters on the brink of all-out war. At the middle of all this insanity is a cop looking for a missing girl, the stranded crew of an ice hauler, and a few other disparate souls. The new trailer focuses on the missing girl angle, and how it all starts to tie in to the other dangling threads.

The show manages to weave some personal tales within this ambitious sci-fi tapestry, and the first few episodes will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s a nice balance of world-building, but not so much of it that you lose sight of the story they’re trying to tell. If they can keep that balance, it should make for one heck of an addition to the schedule.
