So maybe your intention to get more books read this summer didn’t go exactly as planned and social media took up a bit more of your time than you wanted. Well, there may just be a solution for you. Today the New York Public Library introduced Insta Novels, a variation on Instagram Stories that will allow users to read popular short novels and stories, complete with illustrations by some of Instagram's most popular artists, on the library’s Instagram account (@nypl).
A byproduct on the joint collaboration between the NYPL and independent advertising and creative agency, Mother in New York, Insta Novels “aims to make great stories available even more widely” according to the NYPL’s blog.
Insta Novels launched today with Part 1 of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland with illustrations by graphic designer Magoz. Accessing the Insta Novel is easy. Just head to the NYPL’s Instagram page, and right underneath their bio you’ll see “Alice Part 1” and next to it a tutorial explaining how to turn the pages, or return to a previous one. It’s all very intuitive. Part 2 will be available tomorrow, for those who wish to continue following Alice down the rabbit hole.
Genre fans will also be pleased to know that upcoming Insta Novels include The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, illustrated by Buck, and The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, illustrated by César Pelizer. That’s right, you can impress your friends by telling them you became versed in Kafka on Instagram. How’s that for combating the evils of social media?
