News briefs: Akira is dead, but Jolie back in Wanted 2?

Bloody-Disgusting reported that Ruairi Robinson has left the proposed live-action film adaptation of Akira that was being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and Warner Brothers, and that the movie is "dead as a doornail."

The Russian news site RIA Novosti (via ComingSoon.net) quoted filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov as saying he's working on Wanted 2, the sequel to his 2008 summer hit, and that he's figured out a way to bring Angelina Jolie's character back, though she perished at the end of the first movie: "In July we will start preparation for the film. I think in the late autumn or winter shooting will be performed. The shooting will take place in America, India and Russia."

ReelTalk reported that Spider-Man 3 villain Thomas Haden Church will join the cast of Disney/Pixar's live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars.

A new Web site has gone live for 9, the upcoming post-apocalyptic animated movie from director Shane Acker, produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.

Production Weekly tweeted that MGM Studios' upcoming remake of Red Dawn has opened up its production office at Hollywood Production Center in Glendale, Calif.
