News briefs: Electric Church develops; Depp talks Alice

Sony Pictures has picked up the rights to a series of sci-fi novels by Jeff Somers and has hired Trevor Sands to adapt the first book, The Electric Church, according to The Hollywood Reporter; the story centers on a new religion founded by a mysterious man named Dennis Squalor that converts the faithful into cyborgs with human brains, enhanced robotic bodies, and virtually unlimited life spans.

Adult Swim's animated sketch series Robot Chicken has been picked up for two additional seasons totalling 40 episodes, creators/executive producers Seth Green and Matthew Senreich announced.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XVII drops on DVD on March 16.
