News briefs: Stargate contest; Hugheses to direct Akira?

Fans of Syfy's Stargate Universe are being invited to create a cover and art for the SGU "Online Graphic Novel Sweeps", which will focus on the season 1.0 cliffhanger question: "What will happen to Dr. Rush?" The deadline is Feb. 23; enter here.

Vulture reports that Warner Brothers is negotiating with The Book of Eli's Hughes brothers to direct a live-action remake of the cult favorite Akira, from a script by Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

Paramount Pictures announced that it is making a fourth Mission Impossible movie, with Tom Cruise returning as Ethan Hunt and J.J. Abrams producing, to be released Memorial Day weekend 2011; screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are attached to write the script, from an original idea by Cruise and Abrams.

Penelope Cruz is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in the Rob Marshall-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, reports Heat Vision; it opens on May 20, 2011.

Twitch reports that Hong Kong-based Imagi Animation Studios, whose Astro Boy reboot disappointed at the box office, is going out of business and laying off more than 300 employees.
