News briefs: Twilight sweeps MTV; the Doctor's new girl

Twilight took five trophies, including best movie, at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards, the Associated Press reported; the hit teen vampire romance also won awards for best fight, best kiss, breakthrough male performance (Robert Pattinson) and female performance (Kristen Stewart); the late Heath Ledger won the award for best villain for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight.

A 21-year-old unknown Scottish actress, Karen Gillan, is set to become the next regular Doctor Who companion, alongside 26-year-old Matt Smith when he takes over the role of the Doctor as the show returns to regular series form next spring, the BBC reported.

Kickstart Entertainment (Wanted) has acquired the film option on Joshua Williamson's graphic novel Dear Dracula, reports ICV2; the story follows a boy who loves horror movies and decides to write to Dracula on Halloween the way ordinary kids write to Santa Claus at Christmas.

Mykelti Williamson is joining Fox's 24 as a regular in the upcoming eighth season, playing Brian Hastings, the MBA-type head of CTU New York, who has a razor-sharp intellect, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

BBC Worldwide launches an HD channel on July 20 with the high-definition simulcast of a week of sci-fi U.S. premieres, including the return of Torchwood; the latest Doctor Who special, "Planet of the Dead;" the BBC America co-production Being Human and the third-season finale of Primeval.

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment and TT Games are teaming up with the LEGO Group to create LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, a video game based on the first four Harry Potter books and movies that tell the story of Harry's first four years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, to be released in 2010.
