News briefs: Who star joins Abrams pilot; Thing gears up

Doctor Who cast member Gugu Mbatha-Raw—who played the sister of Freema Agyeman's Martha Jones—is the new female lead in J.J. Abrams's NBC pilot Undercovers and will appear opposite Boris Kodjoe, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Director Matthijs Van Heijningen is gearing up for a March shoot of The Thing in Toronto, based on Eric Heisserer's screenplay that begins when an alien spaceship is discovered far beneath the ice near a remote Antarctica outpost, reports; the movie is a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 film of the same name.

Bruce Willis' sci-fi movie Surrogates drops on Blu-ray and DVD on Jan. 26.

Shout! Factory and New Horizons Picture Corporation will release 50 classic and new films from producer-director Roger Corman, including long out of print and titles that have never before been available on DVD and Blu-ray, including Piranha, Humanoids From the Deep, Up From the Depths, Demon of Paradise, Rock 'N' Roll High School, Death Race 2000, Warlords of the 21st Century, Deathsport, Forbidden World and Galaxy of Terror, among others.
