The suburbs have a new threat and he once stole the Declaration of Independence. Nic Cage has joined the suburgatory ranks as a father who, along with his wife (Selma Blair), becomes hell-bent on killing his own children in Mom and Dad.
After It and Stranger Things helped revive the middle-class horror film this year -- assuring us that yes, underneath the perfect lives of the ‘burbs are the imperfect lives of The ‘Burbs -- Mom and Dad, written and directed by Brian Taylor of the Crank franchise, sets its homicidal gaze on who else but kids in its new trailer. Check it out:
The action, at least outside, seems like that of a zombie film or of a sci-fi horror like The Crazies. Hordes of killer parents are not to be taken lightly. However, the comic timing of Cage at his manic heights helps give the genre fusion its delightful insanity. Something is making parents kill their kids, but the parents aren’t mindless or demented -- they plot and plan and sing strange variations of the hokey-pokey.
While a lucky few got to see the genre-warping film at its Toronto International Film Festival premiere, the rest of us will have to wait for Mom and Dad's simultaneous release in theaters and on VOD on January 19, 2018.
