When the Wonder Woman movie was officially announced a few weeks ago, the Internet said, "About time." We know that Gal Gadot will play the Amazonian princess and Chris Pine has been cast as her love interest, Steve Trevor. According to The Nerdist, the third actor to join the team is Nicole Kidman. But what role will she play?

Nerdist says it’s a safe bet Kidman will play Hippolyta, Diana’s mother and queen of the Amazons. And Kidman is 18 years older than Gadot, which is a better age range than many actresses get when cast as the “mom.” However, even if Kidman dyed her blond hair, she doesn’t bear much physical resemblance to  Gadot.

I suspect Kidman will play one of the goddesses, perhaps Hera, who is the wife of Zeus, Diana’s biological father ... which means Zeus had stepped out on his wife. That would add a natural tension and conflict to the story. Actors love that stuff.

Kidman, best known for her mainstream roles in Eyes Wide ShutMoulin Rouge! and Malice, has ventured into genre territory before, in The Golden Compass and The Others. (Also, Batman Forever. Don't forget Batman Forever.)

According to The Nerdist, “The villains of the movie have been rumored to be the Greek God of War Ares, traditionally Wonder Woman’s #1 nemesis, and the witch Circe. Recent rumors have suggested that Game of Thrones‘ Sean Bean would be playing the part of Ares, while Penny Dreadful star Eva Green is being considered for Circe.”

We have over a year and a half to speculate over Kidman’s role: The film’s release date is set for June 23, 2017.
