Nine spin-offs we want to see post-Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

We’ve been anticipating this moment for years, and now it’s finally come: Episode IX, the final movie in the Skywalker Saga, is here. Many of us have seen it. If you haven’t, you should stop reading this article because it’s all about what happens next, after the last moments of The Rise of Skywalker. In other words, there are spoilers ahead, consider yourself warned!

Spoilers for The Rise of Skywalker below.

Whether you enjoyed it or you didn’t (for the record: I really liked it, it hit all the right emotional notes for me, it wasn’t perfect but what movie is?), one thing is clear: While the Skywalker story might be done, the Star Wars franchise is far from over. It feels like we’re on a bright new horizon, and I’m eager for what’s coming next from Lucasfilm. Because I know the story group over there really values my thought and input, here are the spin-offs and Expanded Universe content I want to see based on The Rise of Skywalker.

rise of skywalker leia

A Leia and Rey Jedi training novel, written by Claudia Gray

It’s safe to say that Claudia Gray can write Leia in a way few writers can; after all, she’s written two absolutely amazing Leia books. I think it’s high time for her to write a third, this time focusing on the time in-between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker when Leia trained Rey as a Jedi. I want to see the depiction of the master/padawan relationship between these two women, along with flashbacks to Luke’s training of Leia. I also want to give Leia room to grieve her brother, and nowhere could serve her better than the pages of a book like this.

Lando Calrissian The Rise of Skywalker

Jannah and Lando, a television show on Disney+

Jannah, played wonderfully by Naomi Ackie, was one of the best parts of The Rise of Skywalker. The return of Billy Dee Williams' Lando Calrissian was one of the other best parts. These two got a brief chance to chat at the end of the movie, with Lando suggesting that they find out where Jannah came from. I’d absolutely love to see a television show chronicling their adventures as the most badass pair in the Star Wars galaxy as they try to find clues as to who Jannah really is.

Rose Tico Last Jedi

Rose and the rise of the New New Republic, a television show on Disney+

One of my main issues with The Rise of Skywalker is the treatment of Rose Tico, a beloved character. I'd love a new television show surrounding Kelly Marie Tran's Rose, in which she trades in her mechanic’s gear and puts her enthusiasm and optimism toward building a better government with The New Republic. This state-building is something we really missed out on in between the original trilogy and the new one, and I'd love to see it through the optimistic eyes of Rose Tico.

Star Wars Finn and poe

Finn’s Force Training journey, a Marvel comic

While I’d love to see this one as a Disney+ show (just make everything a series, please), John Boyega has made it clear he's not interested in returning for a Star Wars show. Instead, then, let's create a comic series around Rey training Finn as a Jedi. And because it seems as though Star Wars authors are given a bit more freedom than the screenwriters (hello, Rebecca Roanhorse's Resistance Reborn), Finn's space boyfriend Poe should, of course, be along for the ride.

babu-frik

Babu Frik and D-0, an animated series on Disney+

It’s safe to say that Babu Frik and D-0 win the cute award for The Rise of Skywalker, and I want to see more of both of them. Maybe after the movie, they can go on a series of adventures. This would be perfect as either a series of humorous shorts or a full animated series in which the two pair up and find a new found family. Maybe Zorii Bliss can even join them!

Poe Dameron Oscar Isaac

Young Poe Dameron and Zorii Bliss, a Disney+ television show

While Zorii Bliss, played by Keri Russell, looked incredibly cool, her character didn’t really have a lot of development in The Rise of Skywalker. I'd love to see her backstory, ideally in a prequel that illuminates the life of a young Poe Dameron. It would be even cooler if somehow, young Poe Dameron and Zorii Bliss (probably recast as actors in their teens or twenties, or in animated form) ran into Sabine Wren and Ahsoka Tano on their quest to find Ezra (come on Disney, just give it to us, you know you want to, I don't care if the time frame would be a stretch.)

Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker

Luke’s Jedi Academy, a novel

I am more than ready to see Luke's Jedi Academy and understand Ben Solo's fall to the dark side. It’s time to fill in these gaps, perhaps including time jumps to Ben’s redemption in between. Where did Luke set up his academy? What went wrong for him? Did all of his students die? Did some of them escape? Where did the Knights of Ren come from? What did Luke do after the destruction of the academy — did he go to Leia? There are so many questions surrounding this time period and so few answers. There is Charles Soule's recently launched comic series — The Rise of Kylo Ren — that may answer some of these, but I want more from Luke's perspective!

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Yoda's Force Ghost Scene [1080p HD]

The Dead Speak!, a comic

One of my favorite things about The Last Jedi was cranky old man Luke, and I want to see more of that! I want a Jedi ghost novel in which Luke and Obi-Wan get to yell at all the old Jedi about how dumb they were, and then Leia stomps all over them, and then maybe Luke throws stuff through Yoda. Am I the only wants this? Is it just me? I want to see Luke and Leia together, and for Leia to meet Anakin AS Anakin and not as Vader, and for Ben Solo to know who his grandfather truly was.

Snoke in a Jar, a poem

I want a book of poetry about Snoke in a jar. That’s it. Just poems about many Snokes living in many jars.
