As if playing the Merc With a Mouth isn't a big enough job, Ryan Reynolds decided to also play the super-strong mutant known as Juggernaut in Deadpool 2. Professor X's stepbrother is broken out of the Ice Box by Russell, aka Firefist (Julian Dennison), and proceeds to rip Wade in two and engage in a fierce battle against the X-Man known as Colossus, voiced and facially mo-capped by Serbian actor Stefan Kapičić.
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Kapičić admitted that he had no idea about Reynolds' dual role until it came time to shoot the Juggernaut scenes.
"I didn't know who was going to be doing the voice of Juggernaut," he said. "Ryan is always there when I'm working on Colossus, helping me with the lines and giving me ideas," Kapičić says. "Then I saw Ryan getting into the CGI costume, and I'm like, 'What's going on, man? Did I miss something?'"
Co-screenwriter Rhett Reese explained back in May that the secret cameo was something that they had decided on during the early stages of development. Not only did it give the character a second chance after X3: X-Men United, it also gave Colossus a worthy sparring partner.
“We committed to it pretty early on, because he’s never been done justice until now,” Reese said. “We always wanted to see a CG Juggernaut, so we finally got that. We also really needed to balance the scales in act three, between Deadpool and friends and little Firefist, who has cool powers, but we needed to make it a fair fight. What greater force of nature than Juggernaut?" Reese said, adding, "It also gave us a chance for him to fight Colossus."
Deadpool 2, including its “Super Duper $@%!#& Cut," arrives on digital platforms today.
