Sure, it’s great to have a multi-season deal for what may be the biggest show on Netflix, but what's the real signal that you’ve truly arrived? Having your likeness put through the blockhead treatment for your very own Funko doll, of course.
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, who as the Duffer Brothers already come as sort of a package deal, are heading their inseparable selves to Hot Topic stores this month with the release of Funko’s store-exclusive Duffer Brothers two-pack as part of Funko’s Pop! Directors series.
The toy world is getting a little more crowded, of late, with behind-the-camera genre creatives who become the stars. Beating the Duffers to the punch by a good three months is Best Picture-winning director Guillermo del Toro, whose limited-edition NECA action figure debuted in May.
While the Duffers haven’t been nominated for an Oscar just yet, they’ve gotten plenty of critical recognition for Stranger Things, and — more importantly to toy shoppers — they’re fan favorites. The North Carolina natives already were on sci-fi fans’ radar back in 2015 with a handful of writing and producing credits on Season 1 of M. Night Shyamalan’s Wayward Pines, as well as the small-release zombie survival thriller Hidden. But it’s Stranger Things that really turned the Duffers’ popularity upside down.
As for when the Duffers will take their Netflix followers back to Hawkins, we’re still in a holding pattern. Season 3 of the Spielbergian series is deep in development, but Netflix’s Cindy Holland recently told reporters that the show's been delayed until at least summer of next year. The wait, though, might be worth it: Holland said the Duffers and everyone else in the cast are working to deliver a “handcrafted” finished product that’ll be better than anything that’s come before.
