November 20 in Sci-Fi History: Sean Young and Jill Thompson

It was on this day in 1959 that actress Sean Young was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She was, of course, Rachael in Blade Runner.

What you may not know (or remember) about Sean Young is that when it comes to trying to get a role she believes in, she works hard for it. So, when Tim Burton was casting the role of Catwoman for Batman Returns, she went on Joan Rivers and basically auditioned. Years later, she made this video about it:

The role went to Michelle Pfeiffer, ultimately, but points for both effort and self-awareness, right?

Young also appeared in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and continues to work pretty steadily now.

Also, on this day in 1990, Michael Crichton's novel Jurassic Park was published. Said to be Crichton’s signature novel, it quickly became a bestseller and spawned the movie and its sequels, culminating (so far) in the scene where Bryce Dallas Howard saved the day in white pumps.

Finally, today is also the birthday of Jill Thompson. Born in 1966, Thompson is the artist of The Sandman, the co-creator of Beasts of Burden, and the creator of Scary Godmother.

What's that? You'd like to see some of her signature style, you say? Certainly…

Tomorrow: Frankenstein meets Goldie Hawn.
