It would produce countless sequels, a bunch of remakes, and set the standard for monster movies forever. And it all started on this day in 1954, when Godzilla premiered in theaters.

Another big deal? You know how you'd lie around and watch The Wizard of Oz on TV every so often when you were a kid? Turns out the first time that happened was on this day in 1956.

Today also boasts a TON of sci-fi and fantasy birthdays. First up is Tom Savini, the legendary actor, stuntman, makeup artist, effects dude, and director. Savini was born on this day in Pittsburgh in 1946.

Roseanne Barr was born on this day in 1952. You may think to yourself, "but … sci-fi?" And to that we ask: How long has it been since you've watched She-Devil (1989)?

Dolph Lundgren was born on this day in 1957. Universal Soldier (1992) and its many sequels, y'all. He also played He-Man in Masters of the Universe (1987) and Frank Castle in The Punisher (1989). But we're particularly fond of his turn as the Street Preacher in Johnny Mnemonic (1995).

And finally, Kate Capshaw was born on this day in Forth Worth, Texas, in 1953. She’s best known for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), but we'd like to draw your attention to the underrated SpaceCamp (1986).
