NYCC 2018: Netflix casts a spell with first episode of new Sabrina series

During a Halloween-themed panel at New York Comic Con (aptly named "Netflix and Chills"), Netflix rolled out the first episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, based on the Archie Comic of the same name.

The crowd was totally unaware that they'd be treated to a premiere screening of the upcoming fantasy series, which stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman.

Shipka appeared onstage for a Q&A, joined by showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale) and fellow cast members Lucy Davis (Hilda Spellman), Miranda Otto (Zelda Spellman), Ross Lynch (Harvey Kinkle), Michelle Gomez (Mary Wardell/Madam Satan), and Chance Perdomo (Ambrose Spellman).

When talk turned to how Chilling Adventures would separate its version of Salem (Sabrina's black cat, who is played by three different felines, BTW) from that of the Melissa Joan Hart series, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Shipka said that the audience wouldn't understand unless they'd actually seen the show.

This turned into a little ruse, where she inquired as to whether the episode was already queued up, and if the audience wanted to see it. Of course, those present cheered with approval and the pilot was screened.

We won't spoil anything here, but we can tell you that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is the perfect thing to watch this Halloween. Believe us when we say that the trailers thus far don't even begin to scratch the surface. The first episode alone drew laughs, gasps, and applause from the crowd at the panel, many of whom we are sure grew up with and love the '90s-era sitcom.

Luckily, you won't have to wait long to see the pilot, or even all of Season 1 for that matter. All episodes arrive on Netflix Friday, Oct. 26. That's five days before All Hallows' Eve, for those of you keeping track.

The "Netflix and Chills" panel also offered early looks into The Umbrella Academy, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
