The official synopsis for Pacific Rim Uprising is out, bringing with it some juicy details on the monster vs. mech sequel. We now know John Boyega's character's first name, as well as more details about Rinko Kikuchi's return as Mako Mori. We also know when the first trailer will drop.
We recently learned Rinko Kikuchi will be returning as Mako Mori, but new details have emerged about both her and John Boyega's character. Previously identified as "Pentecost," we now know that Boyega's character is Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) and Mako's estranged brother.
In the 10 years since The Breach was closed, Mako has been training new Jaeger pilots, and events will cause her to reach out to Jake, a former Jaeger pilot. Jake's fallen in with a criminal element, so expect a redemption story along with some guaranteed Jaeger/Kaiju showdowns.
The synopsis is clear that both Jake and Mako will be leading the fight "against the forces of extinction." The big question is whether they'll end up in a Jaeger when the fight comes. We know siblings can be drift compatible, so will they team up for the battle? Or are the new Jaegers single-pilot? Can we get both of them in Jaegers?
Here's the full studio synopsis:
The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.
John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.
Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.
Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s Daredevil, STARZ’s Spartacus) and also stars Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.
You'll note that Charlie Hunnam's name isn't mentioned, so the film will have to deal with his absence in some way. It will be interesting to see what director Steven S. DeKnight has chosen for Raleigh's fate.
Of course, while we finally know Boyega's character's full name, we know what he really likes to be called.
The full trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising will premiere during the panel for the film at New York Comic Con on Friday, and the film is slated for release on March 23, 2018.
