The Stygian Abyss beckons you in a new, E3 trailer for Underworld Ascendant from 505 Games and Paul Neurath and Warren Spector’s OtherSide Entertainment. While it's been nearly 30 years since we saw a new Ultima Underworld game, Neurath and Spector worked as developers on the first two games in the franchise, which bodes well for Ascendant, a classic RPG with modern-day mechanics that bring to mind the very games this franchise inspired, Bioshock, Fallout, and Skyrim.
Highlighting some new enemies and locales, the latest Underworld Ascendant trailer tells you that merely surviving inside the Stygian Abyss is not enough. You'll have to adapt, evolve, and, of course, ascend. "In such a deadly environment, innovative tactics are required ... attempt something audacious," say the two narrators.
"One of the challenges, one of the opportunities we saw for Underworld Ascendant was creating a world that’s constantly evolving and changing, and not in procedural way, but in a designer-curated way so that every time you return to areas, they’re fresh and new and have new opportunities and new challenges that have altered the choices and consequences of your actions," Ascendant's story writer, Joe Fielder, told SYFY WIRE last month.
Indeed, this is one game that encourages you to get creative and break all the rules. There isn't just one way out of the challenges thrown at you.
"We don’t see it as you breaking the game, we see it as you coming up with your own solution, and the game rewards you for creativity, creative problem solving," Fielder added. "We really want to inspire players to get into that sort of deep end of the pool and find out all the things they can do within the systems. Back in the Looking Glass days, it was tough to be able to tell people about the interesting, strange solutions you came up with, and now with streaming and so many other venues out there, we’re really looking forward to seeing what people come up with and what they share with others."
E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center between June 12 and June 14.
