Ooh we! Rick and Morty fans are salty at McDonald’s over some Szechuan sauce

There *burp* wasn’t enough *burp* Szechuan sauce, Morty. They really *burp* Cronenberged this one up.

Fans of the sci-fi Adult Swim cartoon Rick and Morty found themselves heavily disappointed today when McDonald’s failed to meet the demand for a limited-time McNugget sauce that enjoyed a resurgence in popularity after playing a big part in the show’s Season 3 premiere, “The Richshank Redemption,” back in April.

Since then, the sauce (originally a promotion for Disney’s Mulan in 1998) has received cult status as an Internet meme, with many people demanding that the fast food chain bring it back. Contests for giveaways were held, and Anrew Rea even tried to re-create the recipe on his cooking show Binging With Babish. Short of creating a portal gun and traveling to an alternate universe where McDonald’s Szechuan sauce is available at every major psychic spider supermarket, these were really the only ways to get a taste.

And yet, Rick and Morty die-hards were not truly satiated until McDonald’s said that, for one day only (2 p.m. on Oct. 7), it would be giving out a limited supply of the stuff along with posters celebrating the restaurant’s various dipping sauces. But just like the "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy," not all went according to plan.

Those hoping to get their Szechuan “fix” took to social media to express their outrage and sadness (after waiting in massive lines) over the fact that their local McDonald’s was seriously lacking in supply. According to those on Twitter, 20 was the average number of Szechuan packets sent to each location, and they probably went faster than a bunch of electronics at an Ants in My Eyes Johnson blowout sale. 

Reactions ranged from profanity-laced rants to outright devastation to actual protests. Here are a few of the best ones:

To the company’s credit, it did explicitly specify that this would be a very limited engagement: “When we say limited, we mean really, really limited!” reads the promotion’s official website. Then again, the worldwide fast food giant had a golden opportunity on its hands to make pop culture history and ended up dropping the ball. And while McDonald's did acknowledge the frustration and apologize, one tweet likened the entire experience to "ripping [off] the best fans in the multiverse." Now a one-ounce packet of the condiment is going for $15,000 on eBay

Meanwhile, the show's creators, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, have so far remained silent about this short supply scandal on their respective Twitters. Perhaps it really will take nine seasons or the live-action Mulan remake in 2019 before all fans can get their hands on some of that sauce. May we suggest playing a round of Roy until that day arrives?
