Ooops! BBC releases Who finale early (then begs fans not to spoil)

Well, that’s embarrassing. You know all the secrecy surrounding the upcoming Doctor Who episode “The Name of the Doctor”? Well, the folks at BBC America didn’t get the memo.

For some of the lucky fans who pre-ordered the second half of series seven on DVD, BBC America went ahead and shipped the set — a full week before the finale actually airs. The folks at Bleeding Cool report that several fans have received the DVDs, which includes the midseason finale “The Name of the Doctor.”

Considering that these sets are put together to parallel the airing of the series, it’s easy to see how something like this could happen. But still, with so much secrecy wrapped up in the finale, it’s amazing the company let this one slip through the cracks.

To its credit, BBC America has asked fans to not spoil the episode, and is even promising to release a special clip featuring the 10th and 11th Doctors if the fans who received the early episode play ball. So, be good — we want that clip!

Here’s the network’s statement:

“We understand that a small number of US fans have received in error their DVD edition of Series 7 Part 2 early. We respectfully ask those fans not to divulge information or post content publicly so that fellow fans who have yet to see the episodes do not have their viewing pleasure ruined.

If everyone keeps the secrets safe until next Saturday we will release a special new clip featuring material of the Tenth AND Eleventh Doctor!

There are already some reports making the rounds out there about the episode, and we won’t spoil any of that here. But if you’re looking for some hints, head over to this Tumblr for some tidbits on the big reveal(s).

How do you think Steven Moffat is going to wrap up some of these mysteries?
