The actor who originated the role of steel-skinned mutant Colossus in the X-Men franchise is coming back... but he might not be playing that role again.
According to Comic Book Movie, Canadian actor Daniel Cudmore has been spotted recently on the set of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which is currently filming in Montreal. Although he confirmed his involvement in the film via Twitter, Cudmore also hinted that he might be there to portray a different character entirely:
Cudmore first joined the film series in 2003's X2, where he played Piotr Rasputin, aka Colossus, and returned in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand.
Although he played Colossus for a third time in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past, Cudmore was benched in favor of two actors for 2016's Deadpool: Stefan Kapičić provided the character's heavily accented voice (Cudmore reportedly declined the role because he objected to having another actor dub his voice), while Andre Tricoteux stood in on set for what was ultimately a redesigned and wholly CG version of the Russian mutant.
If he's not encoring as Colossus -- which is entirely feasible, given the mind-melting labyrinth of dead ends and twisted trails that is X-Men film continuity -- then who is Cudmore playing? One fan suggested online that he could be taking on the role of Gladiator, the ultra-powerful head of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard and protector of Empress Lilandra. That would work out fine since make-up and visual effects would most likely make Cudmore unrecognizable from his old role.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is filming under the direction of Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain. It's scheduled to be released on Nov. 2, 2018.
Do you think Cudmore is coming back as Colossus or would that be too much of a clash with the Deadpool side of things? And if not, do you think the actor would fit the role of Gladiator?
