Original storyboards reveal a MAJOR death that was cut from X-Men 3

The 2006 finale in the X-Men trilogy took out almost half the cast by the time the credits rolled, but it turns out Last Stand had one more huge death scene that didn’t make the cut.

Yes, the mostly hated threequel directed by Brett Ratner is reviled by fans for killing Cyclops offscreen, offing Professor X and taking out Jean Grey (though admittedly that last one does fit the Dark Phoenix storyline).

But it turns out that Magneto (Ian McKellen) was also supposed to die in the original script, and that plot point remained in place well into development — and here’s the proof. Newly released storyboards by artist Michael Anthony Jackson reveal that Dark Phoenix was originally supposed to explode Magneto in the final battle, in much the same way she took out Professor X. Whoa.

Obviously, it’s a good thing that didn’t happen — death can be a great narrative tool when used correctly, but everything in Last Stand felt like it was there just because the script dictated that it should happen. Cyclops’ death was handled poorly, and taking out both Magneto and Professor X would’ve been even more gratuitous for fans.

What do you think? Should Magneto have gotten vaporized too?
