Amazon’s fantasy TV series Carnival Row has found its ringmaster.
According to Deadline, Orlando Bloom will play a character named Rycroft Philostrate (now, the Rycroft name must be an homage to Mycroft Holmes, right?), a police investigator on the case of a murdered faerie showgirl on what’s called Carnival Row. That snooping around, however, will apparently come at a massive cost.
Described as a neo-Victorian fantasy noir, the story finds Rycroft navigating a world in which magical creatures escape the turbulence of a homeland riddled by war, only to find themselves as immigrants facing a hostile new environment.
Carnival Row will mark Orlando Bloom’s first major TV role (he most recently appeared on Netflix's anthology series Easy, but this is his first major gig as lead in a TV series), and the Pirates of the Caribbean actor will also serve as producer.
Guillermo del Toro was attached as executive producer (in fact, it was his baby) until the filmmaker had to drop out due to a full slate. No premiere date has been set yet for the eight-episode fantasy series, although fans may want to hang tight: It reportedly won't debut before 2018.
