Today is an exciting day to be an Outlander fan, because not only has Starz announced who will be playing the adult version of that cutie-pie French pickpocket Fergus (played by Romann Berrux in Season 2), but the first official images from Season 3 have also been released.
According to Entertainment Weekly, French actor César Domboy (The Walk) will step into Berrux’s shoes as an older Fergus when the story jumps ahead two decades in the third season of the time-traveling drama series. Here’s the official character description as per Starz:
“Born into a brothel, Fergus has grown up into a charming, devilishly handsome man with a strong sense of loyalty and decorum, despite his unconventional upbringing. He is the ultimate romantic, wearing his heart on his sleeve and falling in and out of love easily. However, Fergus’ devotion to Jamie has never wavered, making the Frenchman an integral part of the Fraser clan. Still, his debonair demeanor masks a longing for a lasting love and a permanent sense of belonging.”
But before things skip ahead 20 years, the series will pick up exactly where we left off with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) the last time we — and his Sassenach wife Claire (Caitriona Balfe) — saw him: about to throw himself into the Battle of Culloden and expecting pretty much to die. Here’s what showrunner extraordinaire Ron D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) told EW:
“It just felt like for the TV show, we’ve been promising this for a while and it just felt like we should have something,” executive producer Ronald D. Moore tells EW of the conflict that was first teased in the season 2 finale between the French-backed highlanders and the British army. “We should give the audience some sense of what happened on that moor.”
We can definitely get a sense of what happened thanks to the first official images for Season 3, released via the good folks at EW. And as you can see below, Jamie will be coming face to face with his mortal enemy, the evil and sadistic Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, on the field of battle. This has been a long time coming, and the two will “engage in a dramatic duel.”
Said epic duel and the battle itself will actually be a bit of a book departure, since this isn't exactly how Voyager — the third book in Diana Gabaldon’s epic book series, on which Season 3 is based — actually begins. (We only see the aftermath of the battle, with a wounded and feverish Jamie. It also opens with one of my favorite opening lines ever: “He was Dead. However, his nose throbbed painfully, which he thought odd in the circumstances.”)
“We’re playing it out more,” promises Moore, who says the epic shoot in Scotland in August was “easily one of our biggest set pieces.”
There’s no premiere date for the third season of Outlander just yet, but the show is expected to return sometime in April, following the series finale of Black Sails.
