Just when it looked liked the Pacific Rim sequel wasn’t going to happen, Hollywood pulls a fast one and surprises you — but there’s a bit of a twist.

Deadline reports that Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil, Spartacus, Angel) is now attached to direct Pacific Rim 2, with Guillermo del Toro apparently sliding into a producer role. DeKnight is definitely a talented guy, and the hire seemingly has del Toro’s full support, but it’s still a shame to see the project change hands. Though he’s done some excellent things in television, Pacific Rim 2 will be DeKnight’s feature film directorial debut.

But hey, we’re apparently getting a Pacific Rim sequel — so it’s all good. The first film was a sci-fi action romp, and we can't wait to see where this creative team takes it next.

Along with news of the hire, the report notes that Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D. The first Pacific Rim hauled in $411 million worldwide in 2013, with the majority coming from overseas markets. Apparently that performance was just enough to push the studio to pull the trigger on a sequel. Here’s hoping this means del Toro’s plans for an animated series set within the Pacific Rim universe will also be moving forward.

Minutes after the story broke, del Toro chimed in on Twitter. Needless to say: He’s psyched.

Are you glad to see this film back on track? Do you dig the DeKnight hire?
