Pacific Rim: Uprising has been a long time in the making, but thanks to today's NYCC panel, we finally got a trailer, offering the first full, tangible evidence of what we'll see when the film hits theaters next year.

Today's panel included Steven S. DeKnight (writer/director), John Boyega (Jake Pentecost), Burn Gorman (Dr. Hermann Gottlieb), Cailee Spaeny (Amara), and Scott Eastwood (Nate Lambert), and they couldn't have been more excited to show off this new trailer, which finds the world back in the throes of a Kaiju apocalypse ...

Guillermo del Toro — who directed the saga's first outing in 2013 — had always planned Pacific Rim as a franchise, a sentiment that still stands, as DeKnight confirmed today. But the path to a sequel posed its fair share of bumps: In 2014, del Toro confirmed that he would return to direct the sequel, but financial hiccups halted production. By 2016, the sequel was back on, but with DeKnight (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Daredevil) directing.

Rounding out the cast are Adria Arjona (Emerald City), Jing Tian, Levi Meaden, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day, who stole the first Pacific Rim and surprised today's panel via recording in order to pitch some (hilarious) songs for the film. But let's be honest: The big stars of this film are the monsters (Kaiju) and the giant robots (Jaegers) that are created to fight them.

This time around, those Jaegers are drafted into duty to fight a new menace, with a storyline that centers on rogue newbie Jake Pentecost (Boyega), a onetime Jaeger pilot who must escape his criminal entanglements in order to face the threat of the monstrous Kaiju. Rinko Kikuchi, who starred in the first Pacific Rim, returns to play his sister.

Pacific Rim: Uprising rises in theaters on March 23, 2018.
