It's been almost five years since some kaiju butt was thoroughly kicked, but the wait to climb into a giant robot for another run is almost over. Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's skyscraper-sized 2012 blockbuster, arrives in just two months. Universal Pictures has now released a new trailer, and it looks like it's going to be massively fun in more ways than one.
Lots of plot details have trickled out, and the film actually looks quite interesting. Robots fighting monsters is certainly a can't-miss premise, but it's just noise and color if you don't have a story to go along with the action. As it turns out, Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) is not a born leader like his father, but a reckless party boy who becomes the reluctant hero. He'll team up with his adoptive sister Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) and rival pilot Lambert (Scott Eastwood) to lead a new generation of jaeger operators against the monstrous threat. In addition, the trailer tells us that someone on our end is allowing the kaiju to enter the world. This Bond-esque villain is also responsible for the jaeger-on-jaeger action seen in previously released clips.
The official Pacific Rim Twitter account teased the trailer yesterday by showing off a brand-spanking-new poster that groups all the jaegers together for one epic family photo shoot. The mechas present are Sabeth Athena (left), Gypsy Avenger (front), Guardian Bravo (back), and Bracer Phoenix (right). These new and improved jaegers will fight against a set of new and improved kaiju, which have evolved since last terrorizing humanity.
Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight makes his directorial debut here, leading a cast that includes Charlie Day and Burn Gorman, who reprise their roles from the first movie. Pacific Rim: Uprising stomps into theaters on March 23.
