The new Pacific Rim film has been pushing John Boyega’s character (the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film) as its end-all-be-all-lead since its first trailer. However, that left many fans wondering where returning hero Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) fit into the sequel. Now the Japanese trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising reveals Mako’s new position at the top -- if not of the movie, than of the kaiju-fighting organization within the movie.

Mako Mori, the adopted daughter of Elba’s character (making her Boyega’s half-brother ... it’s a whole family affair), is now seemingly in military command of the Jaeger Pilot operations. She’s pressuring Boyega to follow in their father’s footsteps and become the robot-piloting, monster-punching hero he was destined to be.

Aside from this, the Japanese trailer seems a lot like the last trailer released stateside, with the exception of a few seconds teasing an anti-Jaeger protest. That makes sense if you remember how much destruction those rock-’em-sock-’em bots wreaked wherever they went in the first movie and humankind’s willingness to give in to conspiracies.

Expect a lot more folks on the pro-kaiju side of the debate in Pacific Rim Uprising when the film comes out on March 23.
