The Koenig brothers are returning to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Comedian Patton Oswalt will reprise the dual roles of identical brothers Sam and Billy Koenig in an upcoming episode of the Marvel series.
Entertainment Weekly announced that fan favorite (and all-around geek) Patton Oswalt will return in the Jan. 31 episode, “Hot Potato Soup.” In the episode, Sam and Billy are "being hunted down in a bid to get at the Darkhold, and only Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Co. can save them."
The siblings back in action ... and viewers will finally get some answers to questions concerning them. Showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen said, "Patton Oswalt returns as the Koenigs, and we finally reveal their family secret."
Could the "family secret" be that the brothers are actually Life Model Decoys? Considering the fact that the show's new arc is ALL ABOUT LMDs (and the Darkhold, of course), I wouldn't be surprised the tiniest bit if that's going to be the big reveal.
Oswalt first appeared as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Eric Koenig during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s first season. His twin brother Billy was introduced in the Season 1 finale, during which Eric was murdered by Hydra sleeper agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton). A third identical brother, Sam Koenig, made his debut in Season 2, which led to a flurry of speculation that the Koenigs were not really triplets but LMDs.
When Trip (B.J. Britt) asked how many of them there were, Sam and Billy jokingly answered "13." What if what they said was actually true, you guys, and there are indeed 13 of them? That'd be awesome.
What do you guys think of Patton Oswalt's return on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Do you believe the Koenigs are LMDs, or do you believe there's another explanation to the fact that they are so uncannily identical?
