With the final round of their "New 52" reboot comics hitting stores this week, DC enlisted the help of the respected Nielsen market research group to get reader feedback, even going so far as sending reps directly to comic shops to survey readers. Not everyone was happy about it, including one of comics' most vocal fans, comedian Patton Oswalt.
Oswalt—who has also written comics, Serenity: Float Out for Dark Horse and a JLA story for DC, while being a high-ranking nerdlebrity—took to his Twitter account after being approached by a DC/Nielsen surveyor at his local comic shop, typing up the following reaction:
"Don't go to @MeltdownComics today unless you like getting buttonholed into douch-ey, stultifying 'New 52' surveys."Oswalt clarified that he had nothing against Meltdown (one of the biggest stores on the west coast), but went on to say that he's done with buying DC books.
"I also bought my last DC comics, EVER, today."
Though numerous titles in the New 52 reboot have been greeted with acclaim, DC has already faced a hefty amount of fan backlash, particularly over the portrayals of characters like Catwoman and Starfire in last week's new releases. The Nielsen survey may be done in the spirit of gathering legitimate thoughts from fans, but it also might be the start of yet another fan assault.

As for what impact Oswalt's reaction might have ... well, he has nearly 500,000 Twitter followers (about double the readership of even the bestselling of DC's comics), a good many of them likely comics readers just like him, so this fire could spread fast.
