It’s been a long time coming, but Pee-wee Herman has finally returned — and the new Netflix special looks to be exactly what you never knew you wanted.
... and yes, we realize it's a bit of a stretch to cover Pee-wee Herman under our typical "genre" banner, but c'mon, if anything has crossover appeal it has to bee Pee-wee and the gang, right?
The streaming service has debuted the first trailer for Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, which follows Paul Reubens’ iconic children’s show character as he strikes out on his first-ever vacation. The adventure is kicked off after super-cool Joe Mangianello stops off in Fairville and inspires Pee-wee to explore the world. Not surprisingly, things do not go as planned. From getting kidnapped by bank robbers to being lost in the woods, Pee-wee will be getting into all kinds of trouble upon his triumphant return.
The script has been in the works for several years, with Judd Apatow (Freaks & Geeks) and Paul Rust also kicking in with Reubens behind the scenes. Though Reubens had considered tackling a “black comedy” spin on Pee-wee (a throwback to the character’s origin as a stage show and HBO special), it seems the family-friendly project proved the most viable option. Which makes sense, considering most of the kids who grew up watching Pee-wee's Playhouse are now Netflix subscribers.
