The first season of Showtime’s gothic horror series Penny Dreadful is in the books, but showrunner John Logan is already devising freaky new plans for year two. So what can we expect?
Logan was on hand at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about where they’re taking things next, and one big reveal was that season two will focus on a new, human villain now that they’ve laid the groundwork in year one.
He also told the assembled crowd that Helen McCrory's character Madame Kali, who guest-starred in episodes two and eight, will be taking on a much bigger role in season two as her circumstances start to affect the rest of the cast. Logan also promised the stakes and stories will be even bigger once the show returns:
“Her supernatural world becomes the threat to all the gentlemen sitting on the stage with me … Next season is very different. Having spent 10 years building this world in my mind, I talk about the first three seasons of what the story is. What excites me about season two is … it gets much larger.”
Logan also teased one arc he’d like to dig into in season two (or beyond): Ethan’s background, as well as the history between him and his father Jared, who could be introduced at some point in the future:
“He was a monstrous man who treated his son brutally. Something happened in Ethan's life that became this curse/blessing. But in the larger theology/cosmology, there's other elements to it, which we'll explore in season two.”
Other tidbits of note: They hope to someday introduce Dr. Moreau and visit the Island of Lost Souls, and this year’s Comic-Con marked Logan’s first ever as a showrunner. He’d previously only attended as a fan. Aww.
