UPDATE: The network dropped a second, slightly longer, trailer with some new footage. Check it out below!

The BBC has spent the past year quietly putting together a Doctor Who spinoff series, and now we finally have our first look. Want a peek at Class?

The series is set at Coal Hill School (an iconic setting in the Who-niverse) and follows a group of students and their teacher as they face off against supernatural and extraterrestrial threats. It’s been described as Buffy the Vampire Slayer-esque, and it certainly feels like they’re reaching for that vibe here. It comes off as a bit darker than Doctor Who, though considering it's set in a high school, we’d think it might not go quite as dark as fellow spinoff series Torchwood.

The first teaser trailer debuted at New York Comic Con and does a good job of setting the mood for the series. Plus seeing Peter Capaldi in action as the Doctor is always a grand time. It comes from award-winning young adult author Patrick Ness (with Steven Moffat producing), so there’s definitely a good pedigree behind the scenes. But still, a story like this seems like a bit of a strange fit for the franchise. We're really curious for how it works without Capaldi on-screen. Regardless, we hope it's great.

Class premieres in 2017 on BBC America alongside the next season of Doctor Who.
