Matt Smith's version of Doctor Who regenerated at the end of "The Time of the Doctor," which aired on Christmas Day 2013. That's a long time to wait to meet the man who is going to fill his fez. But Future Who Peter Capaldi will be getting a very generous welcome: His first episode will appear not only on television but also in theaters.
Fans who want to meet the new Doctor in a theater with several hundred of their closest friends will get their opportunity on Aug. 23, 2014, the day the episode airs on television.
As for the specifics, the BBC website is light on details. For example, we don't know which cities will air the episode, although we suspect New York, Los Angeles and London will get some play. (Previously, the 50th-anniversary special, "The Day of the Doctor," also aired in cinemas, and locations included Kazakhstan, Sweden and Australia.)
However, the site does tell us that the episode will come with additional content, so plan to spend more than the 75 minutes that this extra-long episode will air. It also suggests that eager Whovians sign up for more information on their Doctor Who Facebook page.
Oh, and one other thing: The FAQ for the episode asked the question "Where are we going now?" The answer? "Into darkness." Spooky.
The episode in question is called "Deep Breath," and in it we get to see the familiar faces of Clara Oswin Oswald, as well as the Paternoster Gang (Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax).
Matt Smith will be making a final, cameo appearance.
