When Doctor Who’s 50th-anniversary special, "The Day of the Doctor," aired in November 2013, viewers were surprised by a first-ever look at Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor.

Although we didn’t get to see the next Doctor in all his glory — we only got a view of his intent eyes and epic furrowed eyebrows (oh, and a hand!) — it was enough to get everyone excited about the upcoming regeneration. And it looks like we’ll get to revisit Doctor Number Twelve's blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in the BBC sci-fi series' upcoming season.

When he was asked during San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month if series nine would actually explain how his Time Lord got to come to the aid of his beloved Gallifrey, Peter Capaldi replied “Yes,” but couldn’t reveal how it would play out.

"Well you know, it’s really hard,” he told Erik Nagel. “Right at this moment, I’m here at Comic-Con, but I’m actually in the middle of filming episode 11, which is part of the finale of this season."

"So I know stuff that is unfolding in episode 11, and I know certain things that are happening in episode 12… I haven’t read episode 12, so I don’t know exactly what’s going on there, but in answer to your question… you’ll have to wait and see."

With Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat already teasing the possible return of Gallifrey alongside Capaldi during SDCC, seems like we may indeed be heading back to the Doctor's homeworld. If that really happens, it'll be great to see another side to a story Doctor Who fans are no doubt very intimately familiar with by now. What do you think?

Doctor Who returns on Sept. 19.
