If you’re among the Star Wars fans who wanted more screen time for Captain Phasma, Gwendoline Christie’s First Order baddie in The Last Jedi, then this just-released official deleted scene might just have some of what you’re looking for.
Spoilers for The Last Jedi ahead, so if you still haven’t seen the movie, here’s your cue to turn back!
As you'll see, instead of the rather unceremonious and abrupt end Phasma got served up for the theatrical release, the deleted scene gives her plenty of exposition — and even a little bit more actual face time. The deleted material begins around the 1:37 mark in the clip below.
Finn (John Boyega) still gets his “Rebel scum” line in before blasting Phasma out of an Episode IX appearance (or maybe not), but not before Phasma shows her own commitment to the First Order’s win-at-all-costs ethos. Outed by Finn for traitorously flinching in the face of his life-or-death threat at Starkiller base during The Force Awakens, Phasma takes out four witnesses to the conversation — her own Stormtroopers — before turning her attention to Finn.
As in the original, though, Finn turns out to be more than just a former Stormtrooper with a conscience, and Phasma still ends up meeting her slightly more-timely end — or so it at least appears.
The scene’s effects were never refined for the final cut, so it’s easy to spot the rough patches — particularly when Phasma gets airborne. Still, the extra material offers an idea of what director Rian Johnson had in mind for Phasma, had he allowed her swan song to play out a little longer.
Which do you prefer — the deleted take or the original? If you’re a Phasma fan, are these few extra seconds of character building (or, rather, destroying) enough to atone for the swift exit she received in The Last Jedi? Let us know in the comments.
