Pixar just announced some major news for its next original film, Onward, a fantasy adventure set in the suburbs. While the project was quietly announced at the D23 Expo in 2017— with a trademark for the title filed as well not long after — there wasn't a ton of information about the project.
Today, the Disney animation company revealed that the cast would be made up of all-stars like Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part), Tom Holland (Spies in Disguise), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Planes), and Octavia Spencer (Zootopia). Onward focuses on two teenage elf brothers (presumably voiced by Pratt and Holland), who go on a quest to discover if there is still magic left in the world.
Directed by Dan Scanlon (Monsters University), the movie was inspired by the animator's own experiences with his brother when they were both younger. We also suspect the suburban setting will allow for some shades of Spielberg as well. Scanlon co-wrote the screenplay with C.S. Anderson, an animator on Zootopia, Moana, and Big Hero 6.
“Chris brings equal parts huge heart and fantastic humor to his character,” said longtime Pixar producer, Kori Rae. “Octavia can do it all," they added “We’re especially excited about the depth as well as humor that she brings to her character.”
“Tom has an infectious charm and sincerity that makes you root for him in every character he plays,” continued Scanlon, following that up with, "There is no one funnier than Julia, but she also brings a warmth and loving side to her character.”
Onward is set to open in theaters March 6, 2020. It will be Pixar's first original movie (meaning not a sequel or spinoff) since 2017's Coco.
