A new trailer for the weird and -- hopefully -- wonderful Jupiter Ascending has arrived, along with two new posters of the movie's stars.

The film is the latest brainchild of The Matrix creators Andy and Lana Wachowski, and after incorporating some sci-fi elements into 2012's Cloud Atlas, it certainly seems like they're going full genre with this all-original outing. Here's the official synopsis:

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along -- her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Kunis' character, Jupiter, is apparently destined to become Queen of the Universe, a bit of information that the current ruling power does not particularly care for. Tatum's Caine must find and protect Jupiter before she is captured or killed so that she can claim her place at the head of the cosmic table.

While we're still not sure we buy Tatum in the pointy ears -- very few actors beside Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto can pull those off -- the visuals in this look pretty astounding, and we would expect nothing less from the Wachowskis. The bigger question is, can they create a compelling story with their first original screenplay since 2003's The Matrix Revolutions and restore themselves to the top tier of sci-fi filmmakers?

Check out the trailer and the beautifully designed posters below, and tell us if you're ready to take the ride with the Wachowskis. Jupiter Ascending opens in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D on July 18.
