Two men and a woman are the sole remaining survivors of a nuclear holocaust in the first trailer for Z for Zachariah.

When we meet the young woman played by Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad), she is living alone in a fertile, thriving valley that has somehow avoided the effects of the nuclear cataclysm that has apparently ruined the rest of the world.

A second survivor, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor (Serenity), comes onto the land and, after casting aside their initial suspicions, the pair form first a friendship and then something more. But as you might expect, that relationship is put to the test when a third person, played by Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness), enters the scene.

The trailer plays up the loneliness of the setting and the tension that is all but inevitable given the situation the three survivors find themselves in. Z for Zachariah (which is based on a 1974 novel of the same name by Robert C. O’Brien) is directed by Craig Zobel, who made an excellent psychological drama called Compliance a few years ago. Zobel's new movie seems to fit well into the current wave of independent, character-driven sci-fi films we've seen crop up in recent times.

The official synopsis, a poster and the trailer are below. Take a look and let us know if Z for Zachariah makes your "must-see" list. The movie opens on Aug. 21.

Here’s the synopsis:

In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel.
