Star Wars Rebels has been on the air for two seasons, and in that time, it’s shown us a few familiar faces: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Mace Windu. C-3P0. Commander Rex. Ahsoka Tano. Now, fans are getting a more regal appearance: Princess Leia will be gracing Star Wars Rebels in the episode, “A Princess in Lothal,” which will air on January 20, 2016.
TV Insider has the inside on the plot: Princess Leia arrives on Lothal, the planet where our heroes are based, on a secret mission to acquire ships for the Rebellion. However, her plans go awry when the Empire puts the planet on lockdown.
According to StarWars.com, Star Wars Rebels’ executive producer/supervising director Dave Filoni said,
“One of the complex challenges of depicting Leia in Rebels is that we have to remind the audience that she is part of the Empire at this point….She doesn’t believe in the Empire, but she is acting the part, almost as a double agent. The Empire sees her as a privileged princess who runs mercy missions to wayward worlds, but in truth she is much stronger and more dangerous than they imagine.”
From her brief appearance in this clip, below, we see the young senator giving orders while quickly getting to the point—which is exactly how we see the future General Organa throughout most of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.
The sharp-tongued Princess Leia is being voiced by Julie Dolan (who also voiced Leia in the game Star Wars: Uprising), and not, alas, the even sharper-tongued Carrie Fisher. But it will be wonderful seeing Leia in action, no matter whose voice she has.
Just as long as we believe that voice if she says something like, “Into the garbage chute, fly boy!”
