Penny Dreadful's abrupt ending after the Season 3 finale in June 2016 left us all with twisted visions of the future gothic frolickings of Ethan, Vanessa, and Sir Malcolm. Series writer and creator John Logan (Spectre, Skyfall) was satisfied with the tragic tale he completed, and left hopes for a fourth season rapidly evaporating into the ether.
Helping to fill the stinging void, Titan Comics teamed up with Penny Dreadful's showrunner Chris King and artist Jesus Hervas last spring to publish Penny Dreadful: The Awaking, a four-issue comic series that continued the quest to eradicate evil six months after Vanessa's demise.
Here's the series description:
Written by Penny Dreadful TV series co-executive producer Chris King with interior art from Jesús Hervás (Sons of Anarchy) and colors by Jason Wordie, this new comic sees Ethan Chandler (portrayed by Josh Hartnett in the series) unable to move on. As he searches desperately for meaning in a world without Vanessa, ancient words echo across the centuries, and he is called on once again to take up arms against the creatures crawling out of the night.
Titan has gathered the first four issues of the current story arc in a deluxe new 122-page edition that insinuates itself into comic shops on Nov. 7 as the demonic demimonde mounts a new offensive and previous decisions re-emerge to disrupt the placid plans of our monster-battling bunch.
