Klingons, the most ferocious, yet honorable, fighters in the beta quadrant, work hard, play hard and love hard. Unsurprisingly, they also drink hard. Now Klingons, and the humans that love them, will be able to wash down their gagh and heart of targ with a familiar beverage here on Earth: Warnog.
The Federation of Beer has announced that warnog, a Klingon ale that first appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Rightful Heir," will be appearing on shelves in the United States and Canada later this year.
According to the press release,
Klingon Warnog is an official Star Trek beer brewed under license by Tin Man Brewing Company of Evansville, Indiana. This singular beer incorporates rye malt into a modern Dunkelweizen grain bill, creating a flavor profile that is both familiar and unique. Warnog's aroma is predominantly mild banana and clove produced by the German wheat yeast, supported by subtle sweet malt character from the use of Munich malt. The flavor draws heavily from the blending of the rye malt and traditional clove character, creating a very rich and unique flavor. The inclusion of wheat and caramel malts help to round out the mouthfeel of this beer, making this Dunkelweizen hearty enough to be called a Klingon Warnog.
It may not be the warrior's drink that prune juice is, but it should appeal to those who like German-style beers after a hard day's work with a bat'leth.
If you can beam down to Canada, the Federation of Beer is currently producing the "mind-melding good," an Irish-red style Vulcan ale. Want something a little darker than a dunkelweizen (a dark wheat beer)? There's always the Take the Black stout, courtesy of Ommegang and Game of Thrones.
