Quench your thirst for blood with this 15 minute gameplay trailer for Vampyr

After wowing us with their critically acclaimed video game Life Is Strange, developers DontNod are now taking us into the gothic world of Vampyr.

During this past week’s Gamescon 2016, DontNod presented their new upcoming game to the assembled press, and they’ve now released a 15-minute gameplay video for us to sink our teeth into.

The action-RPG game follows a vampire named Dracula Varney Angel Dr. Jonathan Reid. The video below shows the game in its pre-alpha version, so I’m sure there will be improvements made to the overall gameplay (in fact, we’re being told the combat system is in its early development process) and the graphics, but I really like what I’m seeing so far.

The good folks at DontNod define Vampyr as a “unique gameplay experience, where the narrative is directly tied to the gameplay.” Here’s a description of the game:

Investigate the people of London, and peer through their bodies to see the quality of blood that flows through them. Perhaps you find a terrible person who you believe deserves to die, and decide to feed on him. But what if he suffers from poor quality blood? Perhaps a father – with no reason to lose his life – has the purest blood, and will therefore gain you greater experience points… your moral choices will directly affect the game world as you struggle to come to terms with your human/vampire duality.

Taking lives in London is not easy. Killing too many in a district may cause its infrastructure to collapse and turn into disarray. Every single life will also have a butterfly effect on the other NPCs surrounding them. Every life you take away will have consequences for the city and the people around them: Cursed be the choice!

Vampyr will feature some brawling, shooting and crafting, and there will be various missions assigned by in-game characters (a bit like Assassin's Creed, I guess), but you’ll also have to find human victims to quench your need for blood (shades of BloodRayne, anyone?). DontNod added in a press release:

“Don’t forget: sooner or later, you will have to feed, and make a difficult choice... who will be your prey? Absolutely all characters in the game are potential victims of your vampiric lust. Carefully study the habits of your next victim, his or her relationships with other characters, and set up your strategy to feed, unnoticed: seduce them, change their daily habits, or make sure they end up alone in a dark street...”

Vampyr will come out of the shadows for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2017.
