The second full-length trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Martian has landed, and Matt Damon is definitely going to have his hands full on the Red Planet.

The film is based on Andy Weir’s 2011 novel of the same name, and follows astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) after he is presumed dead and left behind during a fierce storm on Mars. Things get interesting when Watney wakes up a few hours later, all alone, forced to find a way to survive with limited resources. We get a look at Watney’s journey on the planet, as well as a potentially dangerous and unauthorized rescue mission to save him. Along with Damon, the film also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Donald Glover.

There’s a decent bit of new footage here, and the entire package seems to do a much better job of balancing the action, comedy (“In your face, Neil Armstrong!”) and drama. Yes, the first trailer looked great, but this one really sells the concept a bit more. You get a better feel for Watney’s wit, and see a bit more of the ground mission aiming to save him. They also get immediate cool points for using “All Along the Watchtower” in the trailer. Fits the tone quite well.
