Wow, has it really been 10 years already since Halo first entered our vocabulary? Time flies when you're exterminating the Covenant.
Nov. 15 marks the 10th anniversary of the holy Halo empire with a nostalgic new game release. On that day, Xboxers worldwide will pause to honor the legacy of arguably the best first-person shooter ever, gleaming energy swords held high.
In advance of the launch, Microsoft has created a tribute trailer for their latest Halo edition that may have you sobbing in your gaming chair. The teaser rewinds the last decade of gameplay, blending storylines to create a seamless trip down memory lane.
Created in grand celebration of the 10th anniversary of one of the fiercest franchises in gaming history, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a budget-priced, re-mastered version of the original Halo campaign, with bumped-up graphics, Achievements, Terminals and Skulls. It will be sold and bundled with seven of the coolest multiplayer maps in Halo history for campaigns on Xbox LIVE. Microsoft's in-house gaming studio, 343 Industries, will develop the special celebration edition.
Halo: Combat Evolved, the original game, was developed by Chicago-based Bungie Studios in 1999 and was first code-named Blam! before they were acquired by Microsoft in 2000. It became the showcase title for Microsoft's new Xbox console gaming system and heavily advertised in every medium imaginable. Bungie split off from its parent after the release of Halo 3 in 2007, and the Halo grail passed to a newly formed, internal Microsoft division, 343 Industries.
Since its triumphant inception and many sequels and spinoffs, the Halo universe has generated more than $2 billion in revenue, selling more than 40 million copies and spawning a galaxy of tie-in comics, novelizations, T-shirts, bed sheets and cookie cutters. And If we're lucky, the next decade's anniversary might even bring us a big-screen Halo movie ... maybe. Peter Jackson? Are you listening?
Microsoft recently announced Halo 4: the Reclaimer Trilogy, is currently in development.
So what were you doing 10 years ago when Master Chief first energized his MJOLNIR armor and leveled a Needler on the Flood? Relive the memories in this launch trailer until the game's release on Nov. 15.
Now pass me a tissue and my pepperoni Hot Pocket ...
