Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series remains a divisive piece of comic-book media among fans. After a debut season that was met with a lukewarm critical reception and plagued by slipping ratings, the show did well enough to get renewed, and in season two we've seen plenty of new creative directions being taken, including the introduction of the Inhumans to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some fans are absolutely in love with season two's approach, while others have given up on the show, but S.H.I.E.L.D. is still delivering strong ratings for ABC, averaging more than 7 million viewers with DVR playback factored in, and according to a new report, that's led to consideration of a spinoff.
Entertainment Weekly reports that a spinoff of the series is "quietly developing" at ABC under the guidance of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Paul Zbyszewski. There's no word on who the spinoff would feature, what it would be called or what direction it would take, but the report notes that future S.H.I.E.L.D. season-two storylines (by my count there are six episodes left in the season) will "lay the groundwork" for whatever the spinoff concept turns out to be.
As for when we might see the series, the report notes the "best-case scenario" is this fall, at the start of the 2015-2016 broadcast season, but it's also possible the show could be a midseason replacement, and it's even possible that ABC won't pick it up. Part of the problem, of course, is that the network still hasn't chosen which of the pilots it's currently developing will make it to series, so that could affect the schedule in a number of ways. As for ABC's other Marvel shows, EW reports that S.H.I.E.L.D. is "pretty much guaranteed" to be back for season three, while the chances of the acclaimed period thriller Agent Carter returning are "roughly 60 percent" at this point.
So, if all goes well, by this time next year there could be three Marvel Studios series on ABC. What do you think? Is a S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff a good idea?
