Hello, what have we here?
Billy Dee Williams, who first originated the role of smuggler, card player, and Cloud City administrator Lando Williams in 1980's Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, will be returning to the Star Wars franchise to reprise the character in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX, according to a report from THR.
Rumors of Williams' involvement in the sequel began swirling after a planned appearance at Saskatchewan Entertainment Expo was canceled due to "a film schedule conflict," leading many fans and news outlets (SYFY WIRE included) to speculate that the film in question was Episode IX.
This will be Williams' first appearance as Lando in a feature film since Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in 1983. He has also lent his voice to animated versions of the character in films such as 2014's The Lego Movie and 2017's The Lego Batman Movie, two episodes of the Star Wars Rebels television series, and video games like 2017's Star Wars Battlefront II. (Donald Glover portrayed a younger incarnation of Lando earlier this year in Solo: A Star Wars Story.)
Episode IX, directed by J.J. Abrams, also stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver. Keri Russell is the newest actor to join the franchise in an as of yet unconfirmed role. The film is slated for a Dec. 20, 2019, release.
