In one of the weirdest twists of fate we've seen in movies, it sounds like Channing Tatum could potentially leave a project he almost single-handedly willed into existence.
The Wrap is reporting the deal to bring in Tatum as the star of the X-Men spinoff Gambit is “in jeopardy of falling apart,” with the actor prepared to walk away from the project just two months before shooting is set to begin. The report doesn’t include any more details about what has allegedly gone wrong, and honestly, it seems strange that Tatum would leave the film without a very good reason.
He’s been pushing to play this character for years, and leveraged his star power to help ease Fox into giving it the green light. For him to be considering an exit this late in the game — just a few weeks removed from hyping the project in grand fashion at San Diego Comic-Con — it’s very strange. Either there has been some massive creative falling-out behind the scenes, or Tatum and the studio are both playing hardball in regard to the actor’s contract.
Director Rupert Wyatt will either close a deal soon, or start recasting now-ish (hey, Taylor Kitsch is probably free). Whatever happens, it seems the project will be moving forward, quickly, to hit its planned Oct. 7, 2016, release.
What do you think is going on behind the scenes of Gambit?
